Rich Corpolongo
Saxophone/Woodwinds

Multi-reedist, composer, educator and improviser Rich Corpolongo began his musical training in Chicago in the late 1950's.

First drawn to clarinet, he considered for a time pursuing a symphonic career, but his love for jazz and improvisation moved him in other directions developing into his improvisational LPs 'Spontaneous Composition' and Sonic Blast. While he is known and admired as a improviser, Corpolongo, who has a masters degree in composition, has penned a number of string quartets, orchestra and chamber music pieces. He is a true believer, a new music visionary in whom the creative fires burn intensely.

His musical language is a charming and beguiling cross-section of unpredictability which is both challenging and captivating. In any of his solos you will hear Parker, Desmond, Dolphy, Coltrane, Rollins, and also Webern, Messiaen, Stockhausen, and Berio. Most significantly, you will hear Corpolongo, who has taken these varied influences along with his own creativity, and melded them into a deeply personal musical testament. He freely shares this testament with others, through his playing and teaching and through his recordings.

His two Delmark cds Just 'Found Joy' and 'Smiles' have been rated four stars in Downbeat magazine and has been well received by modern music lovers both here and abroad. Rich's jazz groups have played extensively around the Chicago area, and have been showcased at most all of the Chicago Jazz Festivals starting with 1983 and finishing most recently in 2006.

Corpolongo has given clinics at most high schools and colleges in and around the Chicago area such as the Music Educators' National Conference Convention, Northwestern University, Illinois State University, the ICA Clarinetfest at DePaul University in Chicago, the Northern Illinois University Clarinet Cornucopia in Dekalb Illinois and Arizona State University.

He also has written four books on improvisation, "217 Sequences For The Contemporary Musician" and "Improvisation" a set of three books (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced). He has performed with many legendary jazz musicians such as: Eddie Harris, Herbie Hancock, James Moody, Oliver Nelson, and vocalist like: Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, and Tony Bennett. He is available for performances, clinics, and teaching both composition and improvisation to all levels.
